This installment of my recommended professional reading list, which is updated and published in each issue of Army Chemical Review, is designed to provide Dragon Soldiers of all ranks with a guide to building understanding. It contains four books, an article, an Army techniques publication (ATP), and a podcast that span four broad categories of topics: leadership; joint/Army doctrine and policy; the chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear (CBRN) profession; and history/miscellaneous. Three critical factors must be addressed in our continuing competence as Dragon Soldiers-institutional training, practical experience within units, and self-development. One of the key components of self-development is professional reading. It builds an independent basis of knowledge upon which to form opinions and make judgments. Professional reading continues to be vital as Soldiers maintain the initiative of today and prepare for an uncertain tomorrow.
