Lipase maturation factor 1 (Lmf1), a new gene in hypertriglyceridemia

An overabundance of plasma triglycerides (TGs;rnhypertriglyceridemia) is associated with the commonrndiseases of diabetes, obesity and coronaryrnartery disease, and if uncontrolled, can lead tornpancreatitis and atherosclerosis [1,2]. Simply put,rnhypertriglyceridemia is caused by either increasedrnrates of TG secretion by the liver or by decreasedrnrates of TG removal from the circulation. Whilernits root cause may be simple, the contributingrngenes and processes affecting rates of TGrnsecretion and removal are not. They are multifacetedrnand complex, and while some have beenrnstudied for many years, a complete list of contributingrnfactors is lacking. This is clear fromrnstudies that have failed to find mutations in therncurrent set of candidate genes for diabetes-associatedrnhypertriglyceridemia and in families withrninherited forms of hypertriglyceridemia (familialrnhypertriglyceridemia) [3,4].
