Monitoring of metabolic control in diabetic patients with special regard to self-monitoring

Various clinical chemistry methods for monitoring metabolic control in diabetic patients are reviewed. Special attention is given to methods for self-monitoring but also to methods that are actually performed in the laboratory but have an "educational" effect on the patient's lifestyle (e.g. HbA_1c measurement). The rationale for blood glucose measurment by the patient is the concept of "intensified" insulin therapy.
