Besides the primary insulin resistance, it is well known that the diabetic state per se leads to a secondary (metabolic) insulin resistance as well as an impaired insulin secretion. The insulin resistance in adipose cells from poorly controlled patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D) was reversed after 24h of incubation at physiological glucose levels (Buren J et al., Metabolism 2003; 52: 239-245).
