Cardiovascular risk factors in idiopathic compared to risk-associated venous thrombo- embolism: a focus on fibrinogen, factor VIII, and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP)

Venous and arterial thromboembolic diseases have long been thought to be different pathophysiological entities. Recently, this theory was challenged by several authors and to date, it remains unclear whether atherosclerosis induces venous thromboembolism (VTE) or whether the two conditions share common risk factors. It was shown that patients with idiopathic VTE are at increased risk of arterial cardiovascular events and that marker of (sub)clinical inflammation such as plasma fibrinogen (Fib), coagulation factor VIII (FVIII), and hs-CRP have been linked to arterial thromboembolic disease, and that they are also elevated in patients with VTE. Nevertheless, it is unknown whether patients suffering from idiopathic and risk-associated VTE differ with regard to these markers of (sub)clinical inflammation.
