The diesel engine is currently the dominating propulsion technology in commercial applications, due to its high efficiency and reliability. Natural gas is currently used mainly in spark ignited engines. Diesel dual fuel (DDF) is a concept where a combination of natural gas and diesel is used in a compression ignited engine, maintaining the high compression ratio of a diesel engine with the resulting benefits in thermal efficiency.
