Like many Japanese automakers, Nissan Motor Company, Ltd. has developed its own hybrid elec-tric drivetrain system for use in its light duty vehi-cles. Early on in the development process, it deter-mined that the one motor, two clutch parallel hybrid configuration without a torque converter achieved the best balance in terms of cost, weight, size fuel economy and acceleration. A number of issues had to be addressed before this design could be imple-mented in a rear wheel drive car, however.Nissan believes these issues have been success-fully resolved and it plans to commercialize its Infiniti M35 Hybrid in 2012.
