My working week

It is primarily desk-based, although I go on an occasional jaunt out to a field or regulated facility, to carry out compliance monitoring. Day to day, my role can be varied, albeit undertaken through a computer screen. I will usually be completing supporting information for environmental permit applications, compliance reporting, or applications for the EU (now the UK) emissions trading scheme (ETS). I find myself reaching for my engineering, science, maths and English skills to complete the various supporting assessments. The variety of tasks and projects I work on, and the range of facilities and technologies that I learn about. Permitting may be required for most projects that could cause pollution to air, water or land, so the type - and scale - of projects is wide ranging. These can include household waste recycling centres, combustion plants, metal recycling facilities, energy from waste plants, and food manufacturing facilities. I recently worked on permitting the UK's first industrial-scale carbon capture and utilisation plant, which was really interesting, as this had never been done before in the UK at this scale. I like when I get the chance to learn new things and expand my - and the team's-experience. Early on in my role, I was given the opportunity to learn about the EU ETS and to assist in developing our approach to these applications, and in keeping up to date with the new UK ETS process. I have since completed successful greenhouse gas permit applications for clients and I aim to continue that success with the UK ETS.
