Recent Department of Environment, Transport & the Regions research estimates the scale of contaminated land in Britain as 360,000 hectares, with assessment and remediation costs at £15.2 billion. A diverse range of companies now deal with contaminated land ranging from developers, private companies and pension funds through to professions such as lawyers, environmental consultants and contractors. With site specific conditions, shareholder requirements and project objectives varying it is perhaps unsurprising that technical, legal or commercial uncertainty often arise.
