Management of municipal waste in the UK has to change. It has to change because: 1. Landfill Directive (Article 5) targets require diversion of biodegradable municipal waste (BMW) from landfill. Exactly how much will depend upon the growth rate in BMW over time (i.e until 2020). Broadly speaking, for the UK, each 1% growth compounded over 20 years implies an additional 10 million tonnes of waste. Note there is no requirement to divert waste from landfill until the first target arises (and in official documents, this is frequently depicted wrongly - essentially, we are free to do more or less as we please until 2010 if we take up the available four year derogation).
