A Balancing act

Since the US carpet company Interface began to measure its resource inputs and outputs, it has cited waste reduction savings of $260m over an 11-year period. The 52 percent total greenhouse gas emissions cuts and 80 percent water usage reductions over that time were preceded by a complete inventory of inputs, outputs and wastage, without which the company could not have made any purchasing or other operational decisions relating to its environmental impact.
