To date, messages about recycling and recovery have been targeted mainly at municipal household waste. As a result, we have a much more environmentally-aware public and recycling rates have improved significantly. Local authorities have, in turn, invested in materials recovery facilities (MRFs) to ensure they can efficiently process household waste and recover valuable materials like paper, plastics, glass and metal cans.rnHowever, household waste recycling alone is not sufficient to help the UK meet its landfill diversion targets: it represents just nine percent of the country's total waste arisings. Business activities account for far more, withrncommercial and industrial (C&I) waste representing 25 percent of the total.
