Not content with a landfill diversion rate of more than 80 percent, Kirklees Metropolitan Council is upping its game once again by launching what is thought to be the first electric vehicle to be powered by the waste it collects. Funded through the council-wide transport initiative, the Smith Edison van has a Ford Transit chassis with a caged tipper body and, at 3.5 tonnes, can be driven on a standard UK driving licence. Its 40kWh lithium-ion iron phosphate batteries take between six and eight hours to charge from flat, giving it a range of 100 miles.
