THE LONDON Development Agency (LDA) is making a major contribution to better management of commercial and industrial waste in London. The LDA supported the development of the Closed Loop Plant in Dagenham. This plant recycles 35000 tonnes of plastic bottles every year to produce food-grade plastic for Marks & Spencer and other clients. This recycles fossil-fuei based plastic material into a high grade product and cuts the creation of CO.- by slashing demand for virgin plastic. The Closed Loop plant saves up to 52 000 tonnes of CO2 each year. The LDA provided ￡867000 grant funding to Closed Loop, as well as help getting planning permission, ensuring sufficient power was available for the site and ongoing support with the lease. The LDA's support attracted ￡2m of other public sector support, ￡7.6m private equity funding and ￡8.8m debt funding. Without the LDA's support, Closed Loop would not have set up in London.
