Human activity has the potential to impact on the environment; yet experience has shown that environmental good practice enables the proactive and positive management of these impacts. This can be achieved through the efficient use of resources, sustainable sourcing of materials or by minimising the risk of pollution. These actions result in reduced damage to air, land and water resources and an enhanced environment in which fauna and flora can flourish. Equally important are the social benefits, primarily reduced nuisance to neighbours by liaising with the local community throughout a project to keep them informed about works that could affect them. Evidence of good environmental management on construction and demolition sites is increasingly required by government, regulators and clients.
