The Grand National Event

As a new member of CIWM and a recent recruit at Ricardo-AEA I was really pleased to have the opportunity to attend the 2014 New Member Networks' National Event last month in Oxford. The conference was sponsored by Viridor, which also gave tours of its new energy from waste (EfW)facility and landfill at Ardley, just north of the city. The new 300 000 tonnes per annum facility is now in its commissioning phase and is expected to be fully operational by the end of 2014, serving Oxfordshire and neighbouring counties. EfW facilities are some of the largest waste sites being developed in the UK, and have an increasingly significant role to play in dealing with UK residual wastes, so having an escorted tour around the Ardley site really put the size of the facility into perspective... particularly the empty waste pit, which will soon be full!
