Waste connoisseurs love nothing more than disputing techniques, and perhaps nowhere is this more evident than in the realm of behaviour change. Since the UK first set out to tackle recycling targets, it was clear that aside from the logistics of service provision, changing attitudes was the next priority; since then carrots, sticks and nudges have each been vying for supremacy. One school of thought firmly supports encouragement over coercion and, in 2009, this led to the trial of the first recycling incentive scheme in the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead.
