Waste crime is the blight of this industry, it has been for many years, reaching epidemic proportions on occasions in parts of Europe and beyond. As the sector became more "controlled" or legitimate, there remained those that sought to make easy money by not sticking to the rules. Tony Soprano built his fictitious empire on dodgy waste practices and, sadly, there are an increasing number of serious criminals now involved in handling waste either to make a fast buck or more insidiously to mask more dangerous criminal behaviour. Controlling those criminal activities is essential if we are to protect the good name of the industry and to safeguard the commerciality of all businesses involved in it, let alone the environment in which we all live. Raising the profile of this illegal trade and its effect is the first step in addressing the issue, so the recent release of an EU-Eurojust report on environmental crime was welcomed.
