In common with many others in the industry I was delighted to read of Phil Conran's appointment as chair of Defra's Advisory Committee on Packaging. He is undoubtedly the right man for the job. However, Phil's lukewarm support for the UK's packaging regime [CIWM Journal, March 2015, p42] was disappointing, motivating me to point out the many reasons we should be thankful for the regulations and the EU directive behind it, and to argue that the UK should continue to increase its domestic targets for the benefit of the environment. First, to use a well-known phrase: "If you don't measure it, you can't manage it." Without the packaging regulations, we would not be in a position to say how good our recycling performance is. This in itself is a major benefit.
