Dampers filled with magnetorheological (MR) fluid may better protect buildings and bridges from damaging seismic forces, according to research by Bill Spencer and Michael Sain, codirectors of Notre Dame University's Structural Dynamics and Control/Earthquake Engineering Laboratory. In early 1998, Spencer and Sain tested a 3 ft long, 20 ton MR fluid damper for efficacy in civil engineering applications.
