摘要

Fans looking skyward at tall pop flies at some baseball games might be greeted with an unsettling sight—the stadium's roof chugging along at 1 ft/s, closing before their eyes. In a game that cherishes its history and tradition, old is meeting new as several major league baseball teams build "retro" ballparks that emulate 1920s stadiums while featuring the sport's latest rage: retractable roofs. As baseball has evolved, so too have its stadiums. The birth of modern baseball dates from the early part of the century, and for a long time games were played during the day in front of sparse crowds in bandbox parks. To boost attendance, baseball staged its first night game in 1937 and soon most stadiums were fitted with lights. In the 1960s, many baseball teams joined with their football counterparts to build multipurpose, high-capacity, symmetrical "donuts" that seated thousands more spectators, but created a somewhat antiseptic atmosphere.
