Since the 1960s, "We've had more instrumentation in place, and we've been able to learn far more about earthquake ground motions than ever before," said I.M. Idriss, a professor of civil and environmental engineering at the University of California-Davis and one of three opening speakers at the 1998 Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics Conference. The conference, sponsored by ASCE's Geo-Institute; the U.S. Air Force Office of Scientific Research, Washington, D.C.; and the University of Washington, was held Aug. 3-6 in Seattle and drew more than 615 attendees and exhibitors.
