By mixing the two, project designers halved the materials cost of one of the longest water remediation reaction walls in the U.S. The 325-ft-long, 27-ft-deep wall, one of the first to use a combination of active and inert materials in the reaction zone, uses zero-valent iron to remove trichloroethene (TCE) from a 700-ft-wide by 1,200-ft-long plume of groundwater. The Manning, S.C., project site is owned by MTD Products Inc. As the water flows through the wall at a rate of about 30 to 50 ft per year, the TCE reacts with the iron, which oxidizes and converts the tce into harmless amounts of chloride and ethene, said Steven Schroeder, senior project engineer for RMT, of Greenville, S.C., designer and construction consultant for the project.
