La Asociación Internacional de Estructuras Laminares y Espaciales (IASS)

The International Association for Shell Structures (to be expanded in 1971 to include "and Spatial Structures") was founded in 1959 thanks to Eduardo Torroja's initial push. The Secretariat of the Association was established at CEDEX's Central Laboratory for Structures and Materials in Madrid. Since its inception, IASS has encouraged international collaboration of both architects and engineers interested in the technical field it represents, and through an organization structure which is described in the paper. Also, IASS has promoted research and study, design and construction of shell and spatial structures. In this field, a wide range of structural typologies and constructive methods have been developed, which are summarized in the paper.%En 1959, fue creada la Asociación Internacional de Estructuras Laminares (a la que posteriormente, en 1971, se añadió "y Espaciales"), IASS, bajo el impulso fundador de Eduardo Torroja, con la Secretaría ubicada en el Laboratorio Central de Estructuras y Materiales del CEDEX en Madrid. Desde su creación, la IASS ha promovido la colaboración internacional de los arquitectos e ingenieros interesados en su ámbito técnico, mediante una estructura organizativa que se describe en el artículo. Y ha impulsado la investigación y estudio, el proyecto y la construcción de estructuras laminares y espaciales, campo en el que han ido apareciendo numerosas tipologías estructurales y métodos constructivos, que se resumen en este artículo.
