摘要

Located 26 mi (42 km) northwest of Boston, the town of Littleton, Massachusetts―population 8,225―is a typical small New England town, but it faces a water quality challenge emblematic of those facing many communities across the nation. The town was established after World War Ⅱ primarily as a recreational area for seasonal use. Its attractions include Long Lake, a 99 acre (40 ha) body of water offering swimming, fishing, and boating. The lakeside community has since evolved into a year-round residential town, and today non-point-source pollution from the lake's highly developed watershed is having a telling effect on the water. However, in implementing a series of remediation measures in the lake's 1.5 sq mi (3.9 km~2) watershed, Littleton offers a modest example of how small communities can address their water quality problems.
