Singapore Facility Is World's Largest Potable Plant with Membranes

A recently completed upgrade of Singapore's Chestnut Avenue water Works (CAWW) added ultrafiltra-tion membranes and doubled the facility's treatment capacity by adding 72 mgd (273,000 m~3/d), making it the largest potable water treatment plant in the world to incorporate membrane filtration, according to the engineering firm that designed the system, Black & Veatch, of Overland Park, Kansas. That firm also conducted pilot tests and supervised construction of the $105-million upgrade, which was completed in late December as part of a fast-track schedule of just two years. A consortium comprising Thames Water Projects and SembCorp Engineers and Constructors, both of Singapore, constructed the plant, which is owned by the Public Utilities Board of Singapore.
