Developers in Dubai (Dubayy) are currently undertaking what is perhaps the most aggressive and innovative land reclamation project in the world, the creation of four groups of islands that will add hundreds of kilometers of shoreline. Using Global Positioning System (GPS) technology, these developers are arranging the islands so that three of the groups suggest date palms and one depicts the world's continents. Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the crown prince of Dubai, developed the concept, and a Dubai-based developer—Nakheel Corporation—headed by Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem, the chairman and managing director of the Jebel Ali Free Zone Authority and the Dubai Ports Authority, was established to undertake the project.
