In an effort to expedite the cleanup of one of North America's most significant sources of acidic mine drainage, construction began in March of a wastewater treatment facility intended to cleanse the highly toxic runoff emanating from the Britannia Mine, in British Columbia. In a novel arrangement for a remediation project, the facility will be delivered by means of a design/build/operate/finance contract. The unique public-private partnership between British Columbia's Ministry of Sustainable Resource Management and Epcor Water Services, a subsidiary of Epcor Utilities, Inc., of Edmonton, Alberta, is expected to provide a cost-effective approach to addressing this long-standing environmental problem.
