'Flying' Design Center Delights Toronto

What is black and white during the day, colorful at night, and rises 26 m into the air on stilts? If you have been to downtown Toronto recently, you'll know the answer: the Sharp Centre for Design. Nicknamed the flying rectangle by architect Will Alsop, the center features a facade of black rectangles painted on white corrugated metal. At night, blazing colors from the building's deep windowsills add squares and rectangles of color to the already spectacular structure. For the Ontario College of Art and Design, however, the center is more than just an architectural achievement. By housing offices, studio space, and classrooms, it effects a badly needed expansion of the college's facilities.
