Sustainable technologies that also appeal to the senses are featured in the preliminary design of a virtual atrium, or "virtrium," to be installed at the University of Toronto. One such technology is a living wall—a vertical garden composed of tropical plants set into a vertical rooting medium two stories high—that will serve as an indoor air biofilter for a windowless central space used by the student engineering society. The virtrium will be illuminated by seven hybrid solar lighting systems that will combine sunlight with light from conventional fixtures. The project will mark the first installation of this technology in Canada.
