Inadequate and inoperable equipment, deteriorating riprap, and other safety concerns at Piute Dam, in southern Utah, threatened the lives of thousands of local residents as well as the economic prosperity of numerous towns and communities in three downstream counties. Engineers responded with a roughly four-year-long construction project that was the most expensive state-funded dam rehabilitation effort ever attempted in Utah, but thanks to an innovative engineering design, the final costs of the project were reduced by as much as $6 million.
