Large, robust, pollutant and polysaccharide or hydrocolloid gelled agglomerates are formed with the aid of appropriate cations. Gelled agglomerates are well suited for separating a liquid stream by flotation, a sieve, a centrifuge, a cyclone or other conventional separation processes. Also described is a method for mixing undissolved polysaccharide or hydrocolloid with an aqueous stream polluted by shearing the polysaccharide or hydrocolloid into the aqueous stream to improve logistics and provide savings in treating large volumes of water. Also described is the use of dilute polysaccharide solutions for treating a variety of effluent streams. An application of the invention is provided for hydrocarbon removal within the oil industry, but also for other types of oil-containing water as well as water with organic or particulate pollution.
