For nearly a century, the New York Times Company and its most celebrated ewspaper had been headquartered in the heart of Manhattan near Times Square. But when the media giant outgrew its site and the surrounding area underwent extensive commercial redevelopment, the firm's owners decided to construct a new headquarters building. Their goal: a structure in which the levels of technical and architectural sophistication would mirror the firm's leading role within the media industry.
