Using rigorous structural analysis techniques, detailed three-dimensional computer models, and trials of several possible retrofit schemes, engineers were able to demonstrate that problematic deck joints in a 52-year-old bridge could be eliminated without overstressing the structure's tie plates, saving the owner some $1 million. The Delaware River Turnpike Bridge, which connects the New Jersey Turnpike in Florence with the Pennsylvania Turnpike in Bristol, is a roughly 6,572 ft (2,003 m) long, 31-span structure over the Delaware River. It was built in 1956 and is jointly owned and maintained by the New Jersey Turnpike Authority (NJTS) and the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission (PTC). The njta portion of the bridge starts at the center of the main truss unit at a finger joint that corresponds in location to the official state line.
