HOT Lane Construction Begins in Virginia on Capital Beltway

A dvocates of high-occupancy toll (hot) lanes have championed the approach as a solution to gridlock on heavily congested urban highways. In July construction began on an ambitious plan to add hot lanes to 14 mi (22.5 km) of Interstate 495-the Capital Beltway-in northern Virginia. Upon its completion, which is scheduled for 2013, the project will provide a key test of the ability of hot lanes to relieve congestion in one of the nation's busiest traffic corridors.
