Post Office Dedicates Its First 'Green' Roof

The U.S. postal Service has dedicated its first "green" roof. The 2.2 million sq ft (204,380 m2) building is located in the New York City borough of Manhattan and was built inrn1933. Because the roof was constructed to, if necessary, serve as an additional mail processing location, it has a 200 psi (1,379 kPa) load capacity. The roof was replaced in 2007, and at that time it was deemed strong enough to support the weight of the 2.5 acre (1 ha) rooftop garden.
