Anew pedestrian bridge on the University of Pennsylvania's campus, in Philadelphia, has been dubbed the Weave Bridge because of its unique design, which features crisscrossing strands of steel that form the sides and the top of the structure and are exposed in the bridge's floor system. Designed by Cecil Balmond, the founder and director of the London-based Advanced Geometry Unit of the international engineering firm Arup, the bridge spans 143 ft (43.6 m) in crossing a portion of Amtrak's heavily traveled Northeast Corridor. It connects various athletic fields and campus buildings along the Schuylkill River that are separated by the rail line.
