The airline industry has changed a great deal since the 1980s, when Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) underwent its last significant expansion. Among these changes is a new generation of aircraft so large that they are being referred to as superjumbo jets. To better serve those traveling on these double-deck planes, Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA)-an independent department of the City of Los Angeles that oversees the operations at LAX and two other airports-is in the midst of an ambitious project that within three years will more than double the size of LAX's Tom Bradley International Terminal.
