THE INHERENT VALUE OF MAINTENANCE

The pollcy briefing column in the July issue ("State Transportation Programs Must Reexamine Priorities and Processes, Reports Say") impresses because it serves as a needed shot across the bow of the civil engineering profession. My hope is that it helps move forward the conversation about what modern civil engineering is truly all about. In this article, contributing editor Jay Landers tackles the hard question of how to improve transportation programs by highlighting the idea that there are deficiencies in some of our largest engineering organizations. Such a discussion gives me optimism that a long-overdue dialogue can begin on the work that forms the essence of civil engineering and how civil engineers and their organizations need to work in the 21st century.
