AN EXPANSIVE brownfield redevelopment project planned for a mostly derelict inland docks complex near Liverpool will be the largest such endeavor ever undertaken in the United Kingdom. Featuring approximately 1.4 million m~2 of mixed-use space, it will offer office, retail, and hotel and conference facilities, as well as cultural, educational, leisure, and community amenities. The £4.5-billion(U.S.$7.4-billion) Wirral Waters project is being developed by Peel Holdings, part of the Peel Group, of Manchester, United Kingdom, and is expected to take at least 30 years to complete. It will be located in the East Float area of the Birkenhead Docks complex on the west bank of the river Mersey facing the Liverpool city waterfront.
