Century-Old San Francisco Piers Gain New Life

Piers 15 and 17 along the Em-barcadero, in San Francisco, have been through many incarnations since their construction, in respectively 1915 and 1912. For example, they have served as a base for various shipping companies, as a delivery point for sugar cane from Hawaii, and as a military logistics center during World War II. Now, despite significant deterioration as a result of years of exposure to the harsh marine elements, the piers are on the verge of yet another identity: home to the renowned Exploratorium.
