Pedestrian Bridge Project In San Francisco Region Was No Easy Walk

A site replete with utilities and easements and made more challenging by an interactive community outreach effort, lengthy environmental approvals, and the desire to preserve nearby trees tested the mettle of those involved in a roughly 10-year project to design and construct a pedestrian and bicycle bridge in Contra Costa County northeast of San Francisco Bay. The obstacles were overcome, however, through a carefully determined bridge alignment, a sweeping, iconic structural design, and care- ful attention on the part of the engineering team to the concerns of the various stakeholders in the project, explains Ignacio Barandiaran, P.E., a principal in the San Francisco office of the international engineering firm Arup.
