Mammoth Rift Discovered under Antarctic Ice Sheet

British researchers say they have discovered a massive rift valley beneath the Antarctic ice sheet. The valley, which is said to rival the Grand Canyon in depth, is located in West Antarctica. That area is losing ice faster than other parts of the continent, and it is believed that the valley is contributing to the loss by allowing warmer ocean water to come into contact with glacial ice.
