House Subcommittee Examines Proposals For Financing Water Infrastructure

The leadership of a key House subcommittee with jurisdiction over federal policy regarding drinking water and wastewater is developing legislation that would create a mechanism for funding such infrastructure. The nascent legislation, which also would tweak the tax code to promote private investment in drinking water and wastewater projects, was the subject of a recent hearing by the subcommittee. As it happens, the hearing took place one day after the American Water Works Association, of Denver, released a report estimating that the cost to repair and expand drinking water pipelines across the country over the next 25 years will total at least $ 1 trillion.
