In the innediate aftermath of a disaster, qualified civil engineers are often needed to make on-the-spot evaluations and decisions regarding the continued use and occupancy of damaged buildings and other facilities. To meet this need, ASCE's Committee on Critical Infrastructure is developing a comprehensive disaster response program that will provide Society members with training and credentials recognized by the Federal Emergency Management Agency. Members receiving the training will be qualified to help organize and train local response units that will work with and assist local, state, and federal emergency response teams.
