When the states of New Hampshire and Maine decided to replace the venerable Memorial Bridge, which spanned the Piscataqua River to connect Portsmouth, New Hampshire, and Kittery, Maine, the effort ultimately exchanged one innovative crossing for another. In particular, the new structure is considered to be the world's first truss bridge that does not include gusset plates.
