THE SCIOTO AND Olen-tangy rivers pass just west of downtown Columbus, Ohio, placing a premium on available bridge access for area commuters. For decades, three bridges spanned the Scioto near downtown Columbus, providing a reliable means of crossing. However, the structures eventually began to show signs of deterioration, and as it planned the replacement bridges, the City of Columbus sought to enhance its downtown civic center, reconnect the surrounding communities, and bolster economic redevelopment. The Rich Street Bridge, the last of the three replacement spans, opened in July 2012. The new bridge makes it easier to travel between downtown Columbus and the nearby community of Franklin-ton, serves as a destination venue for outdoor events along the river, and includes design features intended to link the city's past and future.
