San Antonio Turns to Desalination to Help Meet Its Water Needs

Construction is set to begin in the coming months on the first desalination plant in San Antonio. Owned by the San Antonio Water System (SAWS), the 12 mgd treatment facility is scheduled to begin operations in 2016 and will rely on brackish groundwater, a plentifully available local source that the utility has not used before. If all goes well, future expansions of the $192-million facility will enable SAWS to meet a sizable portion of the water needs of San Antonio, an area that has had to contend with limited water supplies in the past.
