Paris Airport Constructs Wetlands Solution to Winter Pollutants

At Paris Orly International Airport, located on the southern outskirts of the French capital, the construction of an innovative artificial marsh is helping to solve an en- vironmental problem that is encountered each winter, according to Frederic Mou-gin, the engineer in charge of wastewa-ter treatment at Orly. During the winter, the products used to deice aircraft and remove ice from the runways and taxi-ways include such pollutants as propyl-ene glycol. Chemicals of this type cannot be accommodated by the airport's regular storm-water treatment system and thus pose a risk to the nearby Orge and Seine rivers, explained Mougin, who provided written answers to questions from Civil Engineering. Mougin is an employee of Aeroports de Paris, which manages the city's major airports.
