The management of the VergelegenWine Estate in Somerset West isvery proud of their farm’s heritageand take great care of the environment.At their own cost they have cleared morethan 2 000 hectares of alien vegetation tocreate a fynbos reserve.Following the 2013 storms whichflooded the Vergelegen Mediclinic Hospital,the appearance of a small gulley on the winefarm caused concern. From 2017 onwards,this gulley suddenly accelerated in size asthe dispersive weathered Cape Granite soilsbelow were exposed and rapidly eroded.Between 2017 and 2018 the gulley increasedfrom 30 m to 400 m long, and from 2 m to6 m deep. Downstream from the gulley anarea of Lourens River fynbos was smotheredby the sediment.
